We ask a lot of our potted plants, particularly permanent specimens that have been in containers their entire lives, gleaning all their food and water from a much reduced area. Needless to say, after a long winter, it’s time to take stock of potted plants.

Give them a good weed on the surface of the compost, and pull out any deep-rooted weeds so they don’t colonise further. Ensure plants are getting all the food, water and soil improvements they need, and repot any that have outgrown their space.

Non-permanent display pots can have any compost left over spread on borders, and fresh added before planting. Clean any empty pots you have before you use them again. Here are some more pointers to start you off with some good early-spring container care.
